About Canada World Youth

Canada World Youth is a national, non-governmental organization that helps young people develop important job and life skills while living and working in communities in Canada and around the world.

Youth live with local families and do volunteer work in areas related to agriculture, community and social services, health care, education, the environment and information technology.

CWY Volunteer Work at the Electronic Text Centre

Students worked at the ETC for approximately eight weeks as part of the Canadian section of their Canada World Youth exchange programs. Student staff members took part in editing and adding SGML markup to a major ETC project, a bilingual Russian-English online edition of the works of the early twentieth-century Russian author Mikhail Kuzmin. In addition to this main project, the student assistants learned and applied individual skills such as the use of SGML validation tools, text scanning and optical character recognition, creation of Quicktime VR images and software setup.

Students employed by the ETC have done invaluable work in editing and SGML markup of texts for inclusion in current and upcoming online electronic journals, exposing them to editing tasks in at least six languages. We greatly value their contribution. Other tasks have included preparation of in-house documentation, and training and providing support for Canada World Youth student volunteers.
